Dangerous Drugs - Reminyl
Reminyl is used in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's. It is an alkaloid that is obtained from the bulbs and flowers of Caucasian snowdrop (Voronov' snowdrop), Galanthus woronowii (Amaryllidaceae) and related species. Galantamine in its pure form is a white powder. Galantamine is a competitive and reversible cholinesterase inhibitor. It is believed to work by enhancing cholinergic function by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain.
Data from two clinical trials, involving approximately 2,000 patients in 16 countries, indicated that people taking Reminyl have a much higher death rate than those taking a placebo. The trials were trying to determine whether Reminyl could be used to treat mild cognitive impairment, a form of memory loss that is often associated with Alzheimer's. Reminyl is approved in 69 countries as a treatment for mild to moderate Alzheimer's but not for mild cognitive impairment.
